MyLÚA's human-centric and culturally inclusive experience drives higher member engagement and collection of social risk factor data from hard-to-reach populations.

10:00 AM >> Integration of Behavioral and Medical Care

According to Milliman, the medical cost for members with behavioral health conditions is two to three times higher than those without. In 2012, individuals with co-occurring behavioral and medical conditions incurred almost $300 billion in additional healthcare costs. Effective integration of behavioral and medical care could save individuals approximately 16% of additional expenses.

Behavioral health issues amplified by COVID increase rates of depression, anxiety, substance abuse disorders, and suicide. In this panel, we’ll discuss the current state of the Integration of Behavioral and Medical Care, areas of unmet needs, where the industry must evolve from this point forward, and the role technology will play in addressing these needs.

11:00 AM >> Scaling the Provider Workforce

In June 2022, 33% of American adults reported symptoms of anxiety or depression. With that number expected to grow, our healthcare system isn’t equipped to handle the volume of Americans suffering in silence. Based on current projections, the U.S. will be short approximately 30,000 psychiatrists, psychologists, and social workers. Throughout this panel, we’ll address the structural challenges in obtaining adequate numbers of behavioral health professionals, how technologies assist in scaling providers and unlock the capacity to address these systemic needs.

1:55 PM >> BreathePulse Demo

Workplace stress has long been a problem that not only affects individuals while working but also affects their overall mental health and happiness. Stress can leave one exhausted and prevent people from getting out and enjoying life in the city. Preventative measures can be taken to promote wellness in the workplace, such as frequent breaks and breathing exercises, which have been shown to reduce stress. To aid in the wellness of individuals working both at home and in offices, we propose BreathePulse, a device that promotes healthy breathing through entrainment with pulsing air. By pulsing a gentle breeze at a rate considered to be a healthy breathing rate (BR), ~10 breaths per minute (BPM), at someone, we can help regulate their breathing subconsciously through entertainment. We have developed a prototype that simply attaches to the back of any laptop. Currently, we are conducting evaluative user studies to test the efficacy of this intervention.

2:00 PM >> Demystifying Risk-based Payment Models

Value-based care (VBC) enabled by the fee-for-value (FFV) payment model has been increasingly embraced by payers and providers over the past decade. According to the latest data from the Health Care Payment Learning & Action Network (LAN), most healthcare payments made in 2020 were tied in some way to value or quality of care. Despite the progress in primary care and other medical fronts, behavioral health risk-based payment is still in its infancy. Join us as we examine the state of Value-based care and risk-based payment in behavioral health.

3:10 PM >> Lost without a GPS: The Promises and the Limitations of Digital Measurements

Measurement-based care (MBC) is the practice of using patients’ behavioral symptoms and functioning throughout clinical care to inform treatment decisions and engage patients in their treatment. Integration of digital biomarkers of mental health using data extracted from everyday technologies—sensor data from smartphones and wearable devices to natural language, voice, and computer interactions—have the opportunity to transform measurement-based care by providing near-continuous unobtrusive and remote measures of behaviors associated with mental health symptoms. Psychotherapy along with multiple randomized controlled trials has demonstrated routine collection of patient symptoms during medication management and significantly improved patient outcomes. In this panel, we will discuss the promise and limitations of digital measurements and how behavioral EHRs can leverage digital and patient reported measures to improve clinical decision making and treatment outcomes.

3:55 PM >> Burnout and the Quantified Workplace Demo

Research has explored managing mental health and well-being via behavioral data streams collected from technologies like smartphones, wearables, and personal computers. These innovations invite inquiry into how they can be appropriately implemented for care. In this talk, we share work exploring computational tools to measure mental health in two important settings: patients seeking mental health care, and burnout in the healthcare workforce. Our findings uncover tensions around how to best measure mental health, what role digital measurements can play in improving mental health and well-being, and how the introduction of such tools reshapes privacy in both clinical and workplace contexts. We conclude by charting future work confronting these tensions, to ensure behavioral measurement technologies are leveraged to truly improve mental health.
